13 Bulk Nanostructured Metals

Abbreviated name of the area:
Bulk Nano Metal
Number of the area:
2201
Research period:
FY 2010 ~ FY 2014
Project Leader:
Nobuhiro Tsuji
Affiliation:
Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University

"Bulk Nanostructured Metals" is a uniform bulk metallic material having submicron grain size or phase structure. Recently developed Bulk Nanostructured Metals indicate various anomalous characteristics beyond the knowledge for conventional metallic materials which have the minimum average size is about 10mm.
This research aims that researchers from various background with original cutting-edge research method try to clarify new physical properties and characteristics of Bulk Nanostructured Metals beyond conventional knowledge in collaboration with each other by both experimental methods and theoretical calculations, and build up science area of a new materials science that lurks in the submicron domain. For this reason, in this area, the research on the following terms is predominantly promoted by the “planned researches” and concurrently, the research on two years that relates to these researches is recruited. The research for one year is not made the object of the recruitment. And co-investigator cannot be staffed.
Number of the adopted research is planned to be about 8 of experimental researches that upper limit of provided budget is 5 million yen by one year and about 4 of theoretical calculation researches that upper limit of provided budget is 3 million yen by one year.
The new research on the area that the planned research doesn't cover is expected for the recruited research. In addition, though it is a mechanical characteristic of Bulk Nanostructured Metal that the planned research mainly covers, the object of the recruited research targets not only a mechanical characteristic but also a new functional characteristic that Bulk Nanostructured Metals exerts. Especially, challenging research submitted by young researchers is expected.
For details of the research content, refer to the area homepage (http://www.BNM.mtl.kyoto-u.ac.jp/)

(The terms of research)
A01 Establishment of material design concept of bulk nanometal
A02 Establishment of manufacturing technique of bulk nanometal by various processes
A03 Clarification and systematization of peculiar mechanical characteristics of bulk nanometal

Attitude to recruited research

Attitude to recruited research of the innovative area “Bulk Nanostructured Metals” (detailed information)

The challenging researches are expected for the recruited research.
The research for Bulk Nanostructured Metals based on the research method that the planned group cannot cover and the challenging research to contribute to the microstructure and the characteristic clarification of Bulk Nanostructured Metals based on the new paradigm is expected for the recruited research.
Though, the planned research groups focus attention on the research activity about the mechanical characteristics of Bulk Nanostructured Metal, it is expected that Bulk Nanostructured Metals which have full of grain boundaries and interfaces exert various functional characteristics. In the recruited research, it expects not only the research on the mechanical characteristics but also a new research that develops such an unknown functional characteristics
Specifically, the following research terms are assumed for instance. Though, of course, it doesn't limit it to these terms and the new research proposal that has not been enumerated here is welcomed. Moreover, the young researchers and the researchers who are not involved in the Bulk Nanostructured Metals research so far are expected to participate.
To the recruited group, the sample of Bulk Nanostructured Metals and the experimental environments for the evaluation of the mechanical properties and the assessment of microstructure, etc. are positively offered from the generalization group and planned groups.

  • Orientation control of Bulk Nanostructured Metals
  • Grain boundary characteristics control of Bulk Nanostructured Metals
  • New functional capability appearance of Bulk Nanostructured Metals(magnetic property, electrical conduction, superconductivity, Thermoelectric property, etc)
  • Effect of field (high hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field, etc) on the microstructure development of Bulk Nanostructured Metals.
  • New fabrication process of Bulk Nanostructured Metals
  • Evaluation of diffusivity of Bulk Nanostructured Metals
  • Effect of hydrogen on the characteristics of Bulk Nanostructured Metals
  • Structural analysis of Bulk Nanostructured Metals by diffraction phenomenon using synchrotron radiation, etc.

Number of the adopted research is planned to be about 8 of experimental researches (upper limit of provided budget / 5 million yen by one year) and about 4 of theoretical calculation researches (upper limit of provided budget / 3 million yen by one year). This recruited research is a research on two years by a single researcher and co-investigator cannot be staffed.
